Systems Thinking

The capacity to map feedback loops between AI models, human behaviour, organisational incentives, and data — understanding that most AI failures are not algorithmic but systemic.

A cognitive competency that enables the mapping of interdependencies between components of a complex system — including AI models, human behaviour, organisational incentives, and data flows — rather than analysing each element in isolation.

In the context of AI-augmented work, systems thinking is not a philosophical stance. It is a practical skill: the ability to trace how a change in one part of a system propagates through the rest. Without it, organisations implement AI tools without anticipating how those tools alter incentive structures, information flows, and human decision patterns.

Why it matters: The majority of documented AI implementation failures are not caused by model error. They are caused by system failures — misaligned incentives, unchecked feedback loops, or the absence of human oversight at critical junctions — that nobody modelled before deployment.
