AI-Human Foundations

A human development programme building the foundations of who people are before focusing on what they do — through five character skills and the FLARE™ meta-skills model.

A human development programme that builds the foundations of who people are before focusing on what they do. Structured around two interdependent axes: character skills (five character traits that sustain performance under any condition) and meta-skills (learning and adaptation capacities operationalised by the FLARE™ model).

The anchor phrase: "Foundations first. Everything else follows."

The five character skills: discipline, courage, curiosity, ethics and resilience.

The relationship between the two axes is the differentiator: each phase of the FLARE cycle depends on one or more character skills to function. Without discipline, focus disperses. Without curiosity, learning stays at the surface. Without courage, adaptation does not happen when it means changing what was working.

Context & Strategy

How it was born

It emerged from the convergence of two sources: (1) direct observation of how elite sport's best performers (including Cristiano Ronaldo and José Mourinho) operate — the patterns reveal character before they reveal technical talent; and (2) the need to answer the question that AI-for-businesses programmes ignore: "before teaching people to use AI, what do they need to have in order to use it well?" The answer: human foundations. AI-Human Foundations was formalised as a canonical framework in February 2026, with anchoring in Adam Grant (character skills as "Hidden Potential"), Albert Bandura (self-efficacy) and Deci & Ryan (self-determination).

What it does in practice

It exists in two application versions: (1) young people aged 14 to 18 in an educational context — here it is one of the pillars of The Edge Program at an elite international school; (2) adults in a corporate context — as a development programme prior to any AI transformation intervention. In any context, the principle is the same: one does not install a new way of thinking (AI-Human Thinking) nor improve performance (AI-Human Performance) without first building the foundation. Foundations is a prerequisite, not an option.
